5k is just over 3 miles and can take about an hour to complete on average, but there's no pressure to finish in a certain time – it's all designed for fun!

Course information

The Pretty Muddy Bristol route is a primarily flat course with mixed terrain that mostly follows the perimeter of The Downs, taking in amazing views of Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge. This event has some extra challenges thrown in with some fun obstacles to do together. There are lots of opportunities for supporters to watch the fun at each obstacle and the whole event has a fantastic atmosphere.

The 5k Course has an overall ascent of 28m throughout the full 5k course.

There are lots of cheering points along the way and the whole event has a fantastic atmosphere which you'll really enjoy.

The course has an amazing atmosphere and is all wrapped up in the heart of Bristol with a great community spirit.

You can take part in any Race for Life event as an individual or a group to raise money for life-saving research. Walk, jog or run together in a group or go solo at your own pace, or lead the way as a Group Leader and get family, friends and colleagues involved! However you choose to get muddy, you’re helping to beat cancer.

Parking on The Downs is not permitted. If you arrive early you may find spaces on the surrounding roads but be aware that road closures are in place on Stoke Road, & Ladies Mile. Stewards will be there on the day to direct you. Please note there is limited disabled parking on Stoke Road.

Please utilise public transport: Clifton train station is a 10-minute walk from the venue which links to the main train station Bristol Temple Meads.

Buses run up to The Downs from the town centre, please visit Routes & Timetables | Travelwest

Car - Due to the city centre location of the event, we are unable to provide onsite parking so advise using one of the many City Centre car parks, the closest car park to the event site is,

Clifton Down Shopping Centre provides a partially covered car park accessed from Alma Road. Parking is spread over seven levels with 360 spaces, including disabled and mother/child bays.

The car park offers safe and secure parking from 7.00am to 10:30pm and was granted the Park Mark Safer Parking Award, The sat nav postcode for the car park is BS8 2NN.

Payment can be made with cash, and contactless by card, or using Apple and Android Pay.

Bristol Clean Air Zone

Please check whether your vehicle will be charged in Bristol’s Clean Air Zone and pay the charge at www.gov.uk/check-clean-air-zone-charge. All you need is your vehicle registration number.

Bristol City Council have installed more cycle parking across the city, You can find cycle parking available at The Downs Café by using what three words ///glad.rich.sting

E- Scooter Rentals: Voi scooters are available throughout the city. Voi e-scooters will cost £1 to unlock and then £0.14 per minute of usage. Check out the website 'https://www.voi.com/' to learn more and download the app. They are available to collect from many city centre locations including Bristol Temple Meads, Bristol Bus Station, College Green & Park Street, Clifton and White ladies Road and can be returned anywhere in their designated zone, these zones are highlighted on the website / app.

Try to use the most sustainable forms of transport when making your way to the event. Explore on foot or go by bike if you can. Make use of public transport and minibuses and take the bus or join a ride-share for longer distances.

Whilst this course is not accessible for wheelchair users given the nature of the obstacles, the event site is accessible.

There are a limited number of accessible spaces available on Stoke Road which is closed but accessible for wheelchair users and our volunteers.

The main event site is on grass, which is cut just before the event, and a variety of pathways across The Downs to allow spectators to watch participants as they make their way around the course.

Bring a water bottle
We’re trying to reduce single-use plastic at Pretty Muddy. Please bring your own reusable water bottle, already filled. We'll provide an ecofriendly water-refill station at the finish that uses as little single-use plastic as possible.

Bring a change of clothes
If you’re getting Pretty Muddy®, remember to bring spare clothes and a towel. Check the facilities tab above to see what there is at your event. Unfortunately, there are no lockers, changing facilities or showers at the Race for Life events, so please bear this in mind and ask friends to look after your valuable belongings, clean clothes and towels.

Have the right kit
It’s a good idea to check the weather before your event and dress accordingly. Think breathable sports gear (leggings and shorts are ideal) and well-fitting trainers. For Pretty Muddy, wear something you don’t mind getting dirty.

Be sun smart
Stay sun safe by finding shade when you’re not on the course and covering up with clothes, a hat and sunglasses. On parts you can’t cover, use sunscreen with at least SPF15 and a 4 or 5 star rating. Find out more about being sun smart.

Your back sign and race number
Remember to bring your back sign and Race number which will be sent to you in the post – don’t forget safety pins so you can attach them to you.

Pretty Muddy® events start times are staggered in 'waves', each wave starts every 15 minutes to ensure you're safe on the course. If you're signed up as a group, please make sure you sign up for the same wave time.

Climb, crawl and slide your way around the course at your own pace. We want you to tackle every obstacle the best you can, but if you need to skip to the next one our marshals will be on hand to assist. Find out more about Pretty Muddy® obstacles.
