About the 3k event

At just over 2 miles, 3k is ideal for families or groups having a go at their first Race for Life. It's a fun, achievable event for everyone – and an unforgettable day out. There's no pressure to finish in a certain time. Walk, jog or run or make your way around the course however suits you and help fund life-saving cancer research.

Course information

Please arrive 30 to 45 minutes before your start time so that you are prepared and ready to go on time.

The course is an out and back single lap 3k, starting in front of Haigh Hall.  The majority if the course is on an tarmac path, however on the outbound stretch the path is a down hill gradient, which means the return stretch is up hill to the finish.

Join forces or go solo

You can take part in any Race for Life event as an individual or a group to raise money for life-saving research. Walk, jog or run together in a group or go solo at your own pace, or lead the way as a Group Leader and get family, friends and colleagues involved! However you choose to get muddy, you’re helping to beat cancer.

Shake off any pre-Race nerves and get moving with our fun warm-up session just before your event.

After you've completed the course, stay on and celebrate with other participants, friends and family with a picnic in the park.

Your entry fee covers the cost of your event, but your fundraising helps us save and improve lives. Join the celebration, join the family, and join the thousands helping to raise the money we need to power Cancer Research UK’s biggest discoveries.

Once you sign up for your Race for Life event, you'll receive an email with all the need-to-know details to help you feel fully prepared for the day.

Meeting point

The event site, start and finish are located in front of Haigh Hall.

Arriving by Car : Follow signs for Haigh Hall , not Haigh Country Park. Follow the B5239, Haigh Road until you reach the Balcarres Arms (1 Copperas Lane, WN2 1PA)  here you will need to follow the road to the left hand side of the pub named Copperas Lane, follow the road for  2 miles until you reach Haigh Hall Car Park  (this is the second car park on your left) 

Car parking is at a cost of £3 and can be paid using cash or card. 

From Wigan, there are buses to Wigan Road and it's a short 5 min walk down the canal to the Park

Due to the terrain of the course, and the incline on the route we have deemed this event not suitable for wheelchair users. Please read the course information section regarding the terrain and uphill sections to decide whether you feel this is a suitable course for you.

Spectating:  The event site is in front of Haigh Hall on an area of this is on hard standing, flat, tarmacked ground with some fine gravel. The journey from the car park to the event site is downhill on a tarmac path

Bring a water bottle
We’re trying to reduce single-use plastic at Race for Life. Please bring your own reusable water bottle, already filled. We'll provide an ecofriendly water-refill station at the finish that uses as little single-use plastic as possible.

Have the right kit
It’s a good idea to check the weather before your event and dress accordingly. Think breathable sports gear (leggings and shorts are ideal) and well-fitting trainers. For Pretty Muddy, wear something you don’t mind getting dirty.

Be sun smart
Stay sun safe by finding shade when you’re not on the course and covering up with clothes, a hat and sunglasses. On parts you can’t cover, use sunscreen with at least SPF15 and a 4 or 5 star rating. Find out more about being sun smart.

Your back sign and race number
Remember to bring your back sign and Race number which will be sent to you in the post – don’t forget safety pins so you can attach them to you.
